I purchased the Pertronix 44011 Flame-Thrower III Black 45,000 Ignition Coil when I purchased the Pertronix 71181 Ignitor III module and it has operated flawlessly since installing the two items in my classic car.
Quality Pertronix product. Pertronix Coil 3.0 Ohm Black. Oil Filled / 12 volt. Fits VW Beetles from 1967 to 1998, VW T2 Split Screens from 1967 only, and VW T2 Bays from 1967 to 1979. This is the ideal coil to use with the Pertronix Ignitor 1. Suitable for all inductive ignition systems.
The Pertronix documentation explicitly states that the total resistance of the coil plus the ballast resistor must be at least 3 ohms. If it's less, the ignition will draw more current than the Pertronix is rated for, and fry it. I had one die that way after running for a few minutes in my garage.
1. The Ignitor II ignition can be used in conjunction with most ignition coils rated at 0.45 ohms or greater. For optimum performance purchase and install the Flamethrower II high performance coil. 2. Attach the black Ignitor II wire to the negative coil terminal. Attach the red Ignitor II wire to the positive coil terminal. (See Figure 3)
